According to The Himalayan Times, a Maoist-affiliated trade union GEFONT’s press statement said that the insurgents have threatened to close down many multinational companies in different districts, including Kathmandu, from August 17 saying the Government was not serious about their demands. Earlier, the GEFONT had put forward a charter of 11 demands, which include publicising the condition of vice-president of GEFONT, Hira Bahadur Rokka, and general secretary Krishna Bahadur Pyakurel, withdrawal of the charges of terrorism leveled against the workers of GEFONT and providing appropriate compensation to the victims’ families.

During a meeting in Kathmandu on August 7, the representatives of civil society and political parties urged the United Nations Special Envoy Samuel Tamrat to help form an independent peace commission to bring the three– the Government, the Maoist and the political parties- in a single platform and resolve the conflict in Nepal. On the same day, in a separate meeting in Bakhtapur, Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies, Ishwor Pokhrel, has ruled out the possibility of Government declaring a unilateral ceasefire and said peace negotiations could take place if the Maoists also agreed for a ceasefire.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has called upon the Maoist affiliated students organisation, All Nepal National Independent Students Union – Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) to hold talks regarding its demands as well as the Government’s proposal to keep the educational sector free from violence. However, Government spokesperson Gopendra Bahadur Pandey said there were no reports on untoward incidents or violence during the first day of the blockade. A Nepal News report quoting the British Broadcast Corporation interview with pro-Maoists trade union leader of All Nepal Trade Union Federation (ANTUF), Shalikram Jamarkattel, said "end of the blockade was up to the government… We will withdraw it as soon as they fulfill our demands. Otherwise it will continue." In response to the Maoists ‘execution order’ for 10 journalists and increasing threat upon press freedom in the country, Nepali media professionals and publications took out a rally in Kathmandu against the killing of Dekendra Raj Thapa, a journalist killed by the insurgents in Dailekh district.

The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) has called off its weeklong blockade of the capital Kathmandu for a period of one month from August 25. On August 24, a joint statement issued by the leaders of joint ‘People’s governments’ of five districts surrounding Kathmandu said they had decided to postpone their strike keeping in view of the requests made by general public, civil society and human rights community. Further, the leaders warned the Government that they would undertake stronger programmes if the Government ignored their demands. The Maoist affiliated organizations, including All Nepal Trade Union Federation and All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary, had called this blockade on August 18 demanding a probe into the killing of their activists and make public the whereabouts of their cadres detained by the security forces.
